“A woman must not depend upon the protection of a man, but must be taught to protect herself.”
“Don’t ever accept ‘because you’re a woman’ as a reason for doing or not doing anything.”
I can’t actually remember where I read these quotes or who told me them but they have stuck with me for a very long time. Although I have not always spoken about it, sexism has never made sense to me. From a young age, being called to the kitchen to help out while my brothers did nothing insulted my senses.
“You’re a woman, you’re supposed to make sure there is always food available especially for your husband.”
“As a woman you are supposed to make sure the house is always neat and tidy.”
We all have 2 legs and 2 hands for a reason. If you’re hungry go and cook. If you feel like the environment you are in is dirty, clean it. It’s not that hard. Doing these things should not be a gender specific role. If a woman does decide to do these things then that is fine. However always remember, never dull your shine for someone else because you need to take care of them.
Apart from Maya Angelou, Beyonce, Rihanna, Michelle Obama, women who inspire me include my friends Daniella and Wura. I haven’t really told them this but whenever I have deep conversations with each of them it gives me that extra push and I appreciate them so much for that. They are both inspiring women in their own ways and I am so excited for their futures.
For me, there is nothing better than having conversations with my girlfriends.
